AMA Sport Commissions are the volunteer bodies that consider, disseminate, amend, interpret, and assist in the enforcement of technical and operational rules for amateur and pro-am competition events sanctioned by the AMA. Becoming A Commission Member
Each AMA Sport Commission appointees must have an active AMA Clubs Membership and be in good standing of the AMA throughout their appointment. Each appointee shall serve a two-year term beginning in January. It is highly encouraged that every commission member attends the annual online AMA Commissioners Conference.
Applications must be submitted by the end of October for the term beginning the following January. Appointees may serve multiple terms. The AMA President may remove any appointee from the commission at any time. Submitting Rule Proposals and Agenda Items
Rule proposals and agenda items may be submitted at any point in the season. Only AMA Commission Members may submit proposals. You may submit via the following link: Rule Proposal/Agenda Item Submissions
All business by the AMA Sport Commissions is subject to review and approval by the AMA Board of Directors. Rules adopted by commissions during meetings and ratified by the AMA Board of Directors are incorporated into subsequent AMA Rulebooks, which are published annually.
Sport Commissions are volunteer bodies of the AMA that consider, disseminate, amend, interpret and assist in the enforcement of both technical and operational rules for amateur racing events sanctioned by the AMA. Individual Sport Commissions represent a race discipline sanctioned by the AMA or a general area that affects multiple types of sport.
Discipline based Sport Commissions are:
- Dirt Track Commission: also includes Flat Track and Sidecar Track
- Motocross Commission: also includes Quadcross and Sidecarcross
- Off Road Commission: includes Enduro, Cross Country, Dirt Drags, Dirtkhana, Hillclimb, Grass Track and Extreme Offroad
- Tar Track Commission: includes Road Racing, Bucketmoto, Minimoto, Supermoto and Motogymkhana
- Trials Commission: also includes observed Sidecar Trials
- Competition Commission: Creates, recommends, reviews, and approves proposals that affect multiple disciplines. This commission will engage outside experts on an as-needed basis.
- Medical/Safety Commission: Creates, recommends, reviews, and approves proposals that affect multiple disciplines. This commission will engage outside experts on an as-needed basis.
- Technical Commission: Creates, recommends, reviews, and approves proposals that affect multiple disciplines. This commission will engage outside experts on an as-needed basis.
Each AMA Sport Commission appointee must be a member in good standing of the AMA Clubs throughout his or her appointment. Each appointee shall serve a two-year term beginning in January. Applications must be submitted by September 1 for the term beginning the following January. Appointees may serve multiple terms.
Sport Commission appointees may include the following:
- A representative from an AMA sport division or sport branch
- A representative of an AMA sport promoter
- AMA sport referee
- A noted expert in the discipline represented by the particular commission
Sport Commission appointment procedures are:
- Completed commission member applications must be submitted to the AMA by September 1 before the beginning of the next two-year term. Terms start in January and last two (2) years. The term cycle is January 1, – December 31.
- Applications will be reviewed by AMA staff discipline oordinators and then nominated by the AMA Racing Officer for appointment by the AMA President.
- Appointees must be AMA members in good standing and complete the following training within three months of appointment:
- AMA Referee training,
- AMA risk management workshop. (Completed affidavit must be submitted.)
It is the responsibility of Sport Commission members to:
- Participate in the scheduled online commission meetings.
- Accept and organize rule proposals from AMA members. AMA Sport Commission appointees shall attend events and solicit information from AMA members, and be prepared to discuss these issues with their AMA Commission.
- Submit rule proposals and agenda items through the official process for any upcoming agendas.
- Provide assistance to AMA staff regarding research and operational issues.
- Assist or serve as an AMA official at AMA-sanctioned events, such as a referee, risk management officer, etc.
- Provide on-site operational assistance to AMA staff at AMA sanctioned events on an as needed basis.
- Represent objectively, faithfully and accurately the interests of AMA sanctioned racing activity.
- Avoid personal involvement at the local level with protests or appeals arising out of sanctioned activity.
- Promote cooperation, consensus and harmony among other organizations and the AMA.
- Promote the interests of the AMA, including growth of AMA Clubs membership.
- Participate throughout the year in AMA Sport Commission activities and support discipline oordinators on AMA staff as may be required.
Individuals who cannot conscientiously meet these responsibilities should not seek nor accept a nomination for an AMA Sport Commission appointment.
Currently seated Sport Commission members wishing to continue their participation must submit a new application by September 1, for the new term that will begin January 1.
